Lulu wins big Saudi award for sustainability initiatives

LuLu Hypermarket in Saudi Arabia has been recognised for the “Best Waste Diversion Initiative of the Year (Private Sector)” at the Saudi Arabia Cleaning, Waste Management, and FM Awards, 2023.

The award acknowledges the strides made by the retail giant in adopting a holistic and impactful approach to waste reduction and sustainability. The award was received at a grand ceremony at Riyadh Marriott Hotel by Shehim Mohammed, Director of LuLu Hypermarkets KSA, representing LuLu.

By implementing an array of steps that not only reduce its carbon footprint but also align with its sustainability objectives, LuLu has demonstrated a multi-layered approach to ESG goals and sustainability.

The steps include big-ticket investment in solar energy as well as everyday initiatives such as significantly reduced paper waste through in-office paperless approach and digital tools, enhancing customer engagement through use of e-receipts and digital shopping brochures, WhatsApp chatbots and communication efficiency.

In addition, LuLu has been strongly promoting reusable bags over disposable plastic ones and even linked it to supporting local breast cancer awareness drive.

The initiatives have been inclusive – shoppers have been encouraged to shift to using container refills in the roastery, for example, minimizing single-use item usage. Shifting to paper bags and carton recycling has reduced LuLu’s environmental impact.

Partnering with The Saudi Investment Recycling Company (SIRC) and installing reverse vending machines (RVM) makes bottle recycling accessible. LuLu also initiated collaboration with Kiswa reduces textile waste and supports environmental responsibility.

Staff have been trained to recognise and embrace an environmentally responsible and customer-centric approach within the organisation.

“LuLu Hypermarkets is honoured and delighted with this award,” said Shehim Mohammed.

“This moment represents our commitment to environmental responsibility, paperless practices, plastic reduction, recycling, and staff engagement and demonstrates our dedication to ESG goals. This award would acknowledge our comprehensive efforts and their positive outcomes, making a significant contribution to a greener, more responsible future.”
